BIOGRAPHY
んoon (pronounced "huːn") is a Tokyo-based band blending progressive soul, alternative R&B, and experimental jazz. Formed in 2014 as an instrumental trio of harp, keyboard, and bass, the group evolved into a genre-defying quartet with the addition of vocalist JC in 2016.
Their sound merges elements of jazz, soul, hip-hop, noise, electronica, punk, and choir music, creating a rich and unpredictable sonic experience. Every member contributes equally to the songwriting and arrangement process, resulting in music that is spontaneous, expressive, and constantly evolving.
In 2018, their debut EP FREEWAY gained immediate attention from musicians and music lovers alike. Vocalist JC’s collaboration with post-rock band toe further expanded their recognition. Follow-up releases, including BODY (2019), the remix album Hoajao, and Jargon, cemented their place in Japan’s cutting-edge music scene. They have since performed at major festivals such as FUJI ROCK FESTIVAL and Zenkankakusai.
んoon’s music has been reinterpreted by renowned artists like Daedelus (Dome of Doom Records) and Hakushi Hasegawa (Brainfeeder), underscoring the band’s influence and creative range.
Outside of their live shows, んoon has composed music for commercial and educational platforms including PARCO campaigns and NHK programs like Design Ah and Mimicries. They have also collaborated with genre-spanning artists such as GEZAN, TENDRE, and Mamiko Suzuki (chelmico), while contributing to recordings, remixes, and productions across the industry.
All their music videos are directed by acclaimed media artist Akihiko Taniguchi, known for his boundary-pushing work exhibited at international venues like the SeMA Biennale and ICC Tokyo. His visual approach brings a layered, experimental dimension to the band’s identity.
In 2023, んoon launched a successful Asia tour, performing for over 100,000 people at the Taichung Jazz Festival in Taiwan. In 2024, they released their first full-length album, FIRST LOVE—a bold new chapter in their artistic journey.
